RCIA Program has begun! RCIA means Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults; some parishes call it the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation for Adults). Either way you call it, it is a process through which unbaptized adults and children over the age of seven undergo formation in the teachings and practices of the Catholic Church. The RCIA may sometimes include adult Christians (Protestants) who have already been baptized or adult Catholics who have already been baptized in the Catholic Church, but have not yet received the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.
There are four periods in the RCIA:
- Period of Inquiry: During this period, people who have the desire to become Catholic ask questions about the Catholic faith and the RCIA program. All are welcome to contact the pastor or any parish member, join in the celebration of the Eucharist and join the various activities of the parish.
- Period of Catechumenate: During this period, persons would have already enrolled in the RCIA program, selected a sponsor, started learning the Catholic faith, meeting with instructors and other catechumens, and attending Mass on a regular basis. A sponsor is a Catholic member of the parish who practices the faith and serves as a close helper and advocate of the catechumen. Note: The Rite of Welcome and Acceptance officially brings those desiring baptism into the Order of Catechumens.
- Period of Purification and Enlightenment: During this period, the catechumen undergoes a more focused spiritual preparation for the Sacraments of initiation – baptism, confirmation and Eucharist. The catechumen develops a prayer life and a deeper relationship with the Lord Jesus. This period occurs appropriately during the Lenten season. Note: The Rite of Sending prepares the catechumens for the Rite of Election, in which the catechumen officially becomes a member of the Elect. The first, second and third Scrutinies help prepare the Elect spiritually through prayers and blessings before the faith community.
- Period of Mystagogy: During this period, the newly baptized reflects on the mysteries of the Sacraments of Initiation which he/she has received, deepens his/her prayer life and gives witness to family, friends and parish members his/her new way of life. This period occurs appropriately between Easter and Pentecost.
