I AM the Living Bread

John 6:41-51

5 Revelations

“I am the Bread that came down from heaven,” (John 6:41) has two revelations:

  1. It reveals who Jesus really is – the Son of God. His real Father is God the Father in heaven; not Joseph the carpenter, as was known by the Jews. (John 6:42)
  2. It reveals the Incarnation – in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:1, 14)

“I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world,” (John 6:51) has three revelations:

  1. It reveals that Jesus is the true Bread from heaven. The manna which God gave the Israelites to eat in the desert was called “the bread from heaven;” (cf. Exodus 16:4; Psalm 78:24; Psalm 105:40; Wisdom 16:20). However, Jesus reveals Himself to be the true Bread from heaven; those who ate manna all died, but whoever eats the true Bread from heaven will live forever; i.e., will have eternal life.
  2. It reveals the Redemption, when Jesus gives the flesh of His Body and Blood as the Perfect Sacrifice on the Cross.
  3. It reveals the Eucharist; Jesus gives the flesh of His Body and Blood so that those who receive it may have life in Him (true life in God).
