Lesson 10
The Most Holy Trinity
We believe that there is only one God, and in this one God, there are three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The mystery of one God in Three Persons is called the Holy Trinity. It is a mystery because we cannot fully understand it, but we believe it because it was revealed by Jesus Christ. We call the First Person in the Holy Trinity – God the Father; we call the Second Person in the Holy Trinity – God the Son; and we call the Third Person in the Holy Trinity – God the Holy Spirit. The diagram below helps us to understand the Three Persons in the Holy Trinity:
We express our belief in the Holy Trinity in many different ways. For example, in baptism, when the priest pours water over a person, he also says, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
When we say the “Glory Be” prayer, we also express our belief in the Holy Trinity. Here is the Glory Be prayer:
“Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.”
When we make the Sign of the Cross, we also express our belief in the Holy Trinity. We begin our day, our prayers and our activities with the Sign of the Cross; we do that because we dedicate our day, our prayers and our activities to God. Look at the diagram below and learn how to make the Sign of the Cross properly.
