On the Road to Emmaus
The early Christians shared many stories about the life of Jesus. Among these stories, the most important ones are those about Jesus’ Death and His Resurrection. The Gospels tell us that after Jesus had risen from the dead, He appeared to His disciples many times. As a result, the disciples of Jesus came to know Him even better. One of these stories is about two disciples who encountered Jesus on their way to a small town called Emmaus.
Here is the story (read Luke 24:13-31):
On their way to Emmaus, two disciples were talking about what happened to Jesus. Jesus came to them and walked beside them. But the two disciples did not know it was Jesus. They thought He was just another traveler.
Jesus asked them, “What are you talking about?” One of them said to Jesus, “Don’t you know what happened in Jerusalem?” They kept on walking and talking.
When the sun was setting, the two disciples said to Jesus, “It is almost dark. Stay with us.”
Jesus stayed and ate with them. At supper, Jesus took bread. He blessed it and broke it. Then He gave it to the disciples. At that moment, they knew it was Jesus!
This story reminds us that Jesus is alive and that He is always with us. At the Last Supper, Jesus broke bread with His disciples; on the road to Emmaus, it was at the breaking of the bread that the two disciples recognized Jesus.
The breaking of the bread continues even to this day at every Mass. During Mass, the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. We receive the Body and Blood of Christ during Holy Communion. The Body and Blood of Christ is called the Eucharist. In the Eucharist, the promise that Jesus will always be with us is fulfilled.
