Love one another
Love of neighbor was already commanded in the Old Testament. As a matter of fact, it is found in the Book of Leviticus, which deals with laws, rituals, community relationships and behavior. This is what it says: “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Lev 19:18). But in today’s Gospel, Jesus gives this commandment new depth and meaning by saying, “Love one another as I have loved you!” (John 13:34) Jesus made this kind of love of neighbor His personal commandment. It was also His last will and testament to his disciples, giving it to them after He tells them, “I will be with you only a little while longer.” (John 13:33)
Jesus offered the greatest sacrifice of all. As God, He lowered himself to become man and accepted suffering and death as a supreme act of love and obedience to the will of the Father for the salvation of mankind. After His own greatest act of charity, Jesus makes charity the mark of His true disciples. As Christians, we cannot be content to merely avoid doing unto others the evil that we would not have them do unto us, nor to limit our charity to those who are equally good to us. The new commandment of Christ extends far beyond that – it calls us to be charitable even to those who have been uncharitable towards us.
