In today’s Gospel, Jesus cures a deaf man, and as his ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed and he began to speak plainly. Jesus said, “Ephphatha!” which means “be opened!” In the Rite of Baptism for infants, the Ephphetha is a prayer wherein the priest or deacon says, “The Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. May he soon touch your ears to receive His word, and your mouth to proclaim His faith, to the praise and glory of God the Father.” And he does this while touching the ears and mouth of the child. Baptized Christians have the God-given grace to hear the Gospel with open ears and to speak God’s Word to others. Too often we take these things for granted, or even worse, make judgments on others thinking that they have failed to hear the Word of God or live the Gospel in their lives; but in reality, it is ourselves who fail to do so.
In welcoming people into the community, St. James tells his fellow Christians to stop giving preferential treatment to those who wear rich clothes, while giving shabby treatment to the poor. He wanted them to treat people equally, regardless of their social status. As Christians, we are called to do the same. Let us ask ourselves these questions: have we treated the less fortunate unjustly? Have we looked down on those who are different from us? Have we excluded those who do not share our own likes and dislikes? My dear brothers and sisters, these are the behavior of the spiritually deaf and mute. We are called to hear the Word of God, and to proclaim it in this world by living a life of holiness and charity.
