A TEST OF FAITH
In the Gospel of John, one of the most challenging tests of faith for Jesus’ disciples prior to His Passion was His teaching that He is the Bread of Life; He said: “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you (John 6:53).” Many of Jesus’ disciples couldn’t believe Him, and they said: “This saying is hard; who can accept it? (John 6:60)” In the First Reading, Joshua challenged the Israelites to make a choice on who they want to serve; either their former gods or the one true Lord and God. In a similar way in today’s Gospel, Jesus challenged His disciples to make a choice by asking them: “Do you also want to leave? (John 6:67)”
Jesus continues to ask us the same thing; He challenges us to make a choice: Do we want to serve God? Do we want to follow Jesus Christ? The way in which we answer these questions are revealed in the way we live our lives. When I was a little boy, all the children in my family went to Mass every Sunday. No choice was necessary, because at that time, the most important thing for us to do on Sundays was to go to Mass. This went on for years, but as we grew older, one by one, a brother or a sister stopped attending Mass. Finally, only three out of eight children went to Mass regularly on Sundays. Like other Catholics who don’t make it a point to go to Mass every Sunday, some of my brothers and sisters either have found more useful things to do on Sundays, or they have stopped believing that Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life, is present in the Eucharist which we celebrate at each and every Mass. If we believe that it is really Jesus Christ, whose Body we get to hold in our hands and eat during Mass, we would make every effort to go to Mass, instead of only when it is convenient. Quite honestly, when I saw my brothers and sisters stop coming to Mass, my heart kept insisting, “To whom else shall I go, especially on Sundays?”

Do we often forget to thank Jesus after receiving Holy Communion? According to the Book “The Healing Power of the Eucharist,” the prayer time after receiving Holy Communion is the most precious prayer time of all because we have just received Jesus and He is within us. Whether it is a prayer of thanksgiving, or a prayer of praise, or a prayer of petition, our prayer is most special because at that moment in time, we are in communion with God. Beginning this Sunday’s Chinese Mass, our choir will lead us in a meditation song after Holy Communion entitled 「稱謝上主」。May our song of praise and thanksgiving to God bring us closer to God and to each other.

August 28 is the Memorial of St. Augustine of Hippo. St. Augustine recalled the experience he had with God: he could not help but say to God: “Late have I loved you, beauty so old and so new; late have I loved you.” “Late have I loved you” expresses that if St. Augustine fell in love with God earlier, then his heart need not be entangled in irritability and restlessness. “Late have I loved you” is the cry of people after prayer; this cry also calls us to pray often, to ignite the fire of love in prayer, to transcend time and never stop loving God.
