REAL FOOD AND DRINK
In today’s Gospel, Jesus said: ““Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you; for my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” (Jn 6:53;55) Jesus’ teaching resulted in confusion and disgust in his listeners. Because they understood His words at a superficial level, they thought that He was calling them to be cannibals. Yet, if those who left Him had remained with Him, they would have discovered how giving His flesh and blood to eat and drink was possible. Like the disciples whose hearts and minds were opened at the breaking of the bread, they would have learned all this is possible through the Eucharist.
A decade after John’s Gospel was written, the great bishop and martyr St. Ignatius of Antioch criticized those who refused to believe that the Eucharist is the flesh and blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. For Ignatius, the Eucharist was “the medicine of immortality and the antidote we take… in order to live forever in Jesus Christ (Smy. 6; Eph 20).” Jesus is the bread of life. We feed on His flesh and blood so that we may be transformed by what we consume. The Second Vatican Council describes the Eucharist as “a sacrament of love, a sign of unity, a bond of charity and a paschal banquet in which Christ is consumed, the soul is filled with grace, and a pledge of future glory that is given to us (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, No. 47).”
In the synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, the ritual tradition of Jesus’ words and actions over the bread and wine at the Last Supper were recounted. In the Gospel of John, the testament of love in which Jesus gives us His flesh and blood was conveyed. While the former provides the means for the ascended Christ to remain present to His followers, the latter signifies the true meaning behind it – the self-giving love of Jesus Christ for the Church, which those who wish to follow Him must imitate in their love for neighbor.
Suffering and illness have always been among the greatest problems that trouble the human spirit. Christians experience pain as do all other people, but their faith helps them to understand the mystery of suffering and to bear their pain with greater fortitude. Through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, Christ strengthens the faithful who are afflicted by illness and provides them with the strongest means of support. The celebration of the Sacrament consists of the laying on of hands, offering the prayer of faith, and the anointing with the Oil of the Sick. The Letter of St. James tells us: “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” (James 5:14-15) Therefore, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will be offered in the chapel every first Sunday of the month after the 10:30am Chinese Mass. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is intended for persons whose health is seriously impaired by illness or old age.
