26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
In the Parable of the Two Sons, the second son who said “No, I will not!” to his father represents the sinners, the tax collectors and the prostitutes. In living a sinful life, they refused to do God’s will. However, as they repented and followed Christ, they became like the son who changed his mind and later went to work at the vineyard. On the other hand, the son who said “Yes, sir!” represents those who did not think of themselves as sinners: the scribes and the Pharisees. On the outside, they appear to comply with God’s will, but like the son who didn’t go to the vineyard, they don’t follow through.
The point of the parable is that doing the will of God is measured by actual deeds and not by mere verbal profession. We must support our words with our actions, matching what we say with what we do. The common problem is that we don’t always follow through as we say. Considering the son who said “Yes” at once but never went to the vineyard, doesn’t he remind us of the person who promised to call but never did, or the friend who promised to be there for us no matter what but never showed up? Sometimes, we too are like that son when we find ourselves making excuses for things that we failed to do: “I got caught up in traffic. Time got away from me. Someone dropped by unexpectedly. I wasn’t feeling well. I forgot. Are you sure I said that? I promise I’ll do it tomorrow!”
In some cases, tomorrow will do. But there are times when today is the day. Perhaps we could have helped someone had we gone to the vineyard today. Perhaps we could have averted an accident had we been there today. Perhaps the vineyard won’t be there tomorrow, or there may be no tomorrow. You and I know our vineyards: family and responsibility, work and community, friendship and loyalty, God and Church. In telling his sons to go to the vineyard, the father was not merely inviting them, but ordering them to work. There is work to do now, and the sons are obliged to do it!
If we claim to be Christians, then we are also expected to do what we are commanded by Christ: to love God with all our hearts, with all our souls, with all our minds, with all our strength; and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Mk 12:30-31; Mt 22:37-39). Love is the identity by which we are known as Christians. Are we who we say we are? Our hope is that we can at least be like the son who first said “No” but later repented and obeyed his father. The command of love still stands, and work awaits us at the vineyard.
